Eternal Waves: A Deep Listening Mixtape for Cult Kitchen Radio

I’m thrilled to share Eternal Waves, a new curated mix I created for Cult Kitchen Radio. This series invites artists to craft sonic journeys, and I chose to highlight music that has deeply influenced my creative path.

The mix is a meditative exploration of classic New Age, ambient, spiritual jazz, and vintage electronic music. Spanning legendary works from the golden era of sound, it features contributions from groundbreaking artists in early ambient, Berlin School, Japanese environmental music, and electro-acoustic experimentation.

With a warm, mellow vibe, Eternal Waves draws from timeless traditions, creating a soundscape for deep listening and reflection.

Behind the Selections

Here are some highlights from the playlist and why these tracks resonate with me:

Paula Anna Strom is a titan, which the recent 3LP boxset from RVNG Inc. shines a light upon. I chose the melodic piece “Cult of Isis” to start things off, from the legendary Trans-Millenia Consort album, which was her debut LP. Originally released on Ether Ship Records in 1982, these modern re-releases of her seminal works call attention to Strom’s sharp detailed ear, and her progressive technique, really so lovely.

Suzanne Doucet is a favorite artist of mine, standing as one of the formative artists of the foundational New Age Music movement, and continuing today to represent the genre. I can see a direct influence of Doucet’s early music on my own work. I selected the track “Cosmic Consciousness" from the great album Transformation, made with collaborator Christian Buehner, and originally released on cassette in 1982.

Hans-Joachim Roedelius of course was a founding member of the groups Cluster and Harmonia, among many others, and has stood for many years as a luminary at the forefront of electronic sound. Roedelius’ great track “Nächtens In Forst (Bordun Mit Tongeneratoren)” has been sourced from the collection Tape Archive 1973-1978. The 3x LP tome from Bureau B presents a particularly potent era from the prolific artist.

“Inner Voice” is a great example of the expansive vision of Brother Ahh, also known as Robert Northern, another favorite artist of mine and source of deep creative inspiration. Brother Ahh was a composer, flautist & french horn player, who played with the Sun Ra Arkestra occasionally from 1964-1975. Brother Ahh always brings a beautiful, expansive feeling to his peaceful sound. Sourced from the album Searching, from the incredible Divine Music boxset, which is highly recommended.

Ariel Kalma is another of my all time favorite artists, and greatly influential. He’s been publishing music since 1975, and continues to release new music regularly on his personal Bandcamp page and labels around the world. The track here, titled “Le Soleil Au Couchant” translated as “The Sun is Setting”, is sourced from the recent boxset French Archives Vol. III, released by the great label Black Sweat. Karma’s music is deeply spiritual, transcendent, and absolutely worth exploring.

Garrett List’s debut “Your Own Self” was originally released on the Opus One label in 1972, and is a statement of avant garde minimalism, and modal spiritual jazz music. List was an American composer, trombonist and vocalist, who sadly passed away in 2019. Thanks to Black Sweat Records for preserving his legacy.

Suzanne Ciani should be well known as a foundational artist in early electronics, who is still working today. The track “Second Breath” is selected from the remarkable album Lixiviation, released by Finders Keepers Records in 2016, which collects a wealth of unreleased early works from Ciani spanning the years 1969-1985. Highly recommended!

Hiroshi Yoshimura’s track brings one of the most active sections of the mix, with this spectral oscillation of high energy. Yoshimura is of course a legend of the foundational Japanese environmental music movement, with this track sourced from his seminal album GREEN, originally released in 1986, and recently reissued by Light in the Attic.

Lyghte is the project of sound healer and musician Jonathan Goldman. The artist put out a collaboration album w/ the one and only Laraaji in 1986, and then two years later released this long-form nugget of soulful drone titled Crystal Resonance on his own label Spirit Music Inc. The selected track is “Hermetic Harmonics” from Side A, a deep meditation featuring overtone chanting and Tibetan bells.

Ojas is the project of one Steve McLinn, an artist based in Oklahoma and releasing his own brand of spacious synthesizer music since 1978. This track was selected from the 1980 album Lotus Songs Volume Two, and features Steve at the helm of the "Ojas Synthesizer System." I love that pulsing squelch sound! Steve is still active and offering tapes and CDs for sale from his website, check it out.
